Update On Haiti – HUB’ees in ACTION! 01/18/2010
![]() The current losses that have occurred and the suffering that has taken place in Haiti are nothing less than horrific. The nightmarish reports coming out of the country along with the images flooding the Internet today … the devastation is worse than we could ever have imagined. Recent reports fear that more than 50,000 are dead and some estimates are as high as 100,000. It is just too soon to tell. One5 Medical Director Brad Guatney and team arrived and set up base at the Mission of Hope Haiti in Tityan, just outside of Port-Au-Prince, Thursday. The team spent the rest of the day treating victims at their clinic. They are taking mobile clinics into Port-au-Prince today. Dr. Greg Bonnen from Houston Physicians’ Hospital, and Dr. Bill Garcia, an orthopedic surgeon from Dodge City, have doctors and nurses standing by to leave as soon as we get the word from Brad. Additional volunteers are lining up to help, including translators and others from The First Haitian Baptist Church of Kansas City. The people of Haiti do not have the resources or infrastructure to respond to this crisis, so outside help is critical. There are many ways to offer support for relief: · Cash is still the most critical need – to purchase fuel, food, water, and medical supplies. You can donate at https://www.one5.org/donation.cfm. We have matching gift pledges of $16,000 so your donation has double impact! Special thanks to Bobby McKenzie of Infinity Building Services, Barbara Smith of Methodist McKinney Hospital, and those who wish to remain anonymous for these matching gifts. · Volunteer – We are coordinating efforts to send medical teams into Haiti to help the relief efforts during the coming weeks/months. If you are interested, send an e-mail with your contact info to Info@one5.org. Please put “volunteer” in the subject line. Additional info for potential volunteers: If you are interested in volunteering for a trip, send complete contact information to info@one5.org and put “volunteer” in the subject line. Include your name (as it is on your passport), home address, cell phone, email address, passport #, and skillset (e.g. RN, MD/specialty, construction, or layperson) – no special skills are required, it just helps us build effective teams. Also, please indicate if you have previous experience with disaster relief, mission work, or working overseas, and if you speak French or Creole. Include dates available. In the meantime, ensure that your passport is up to date (expiration date not more than 60 days out) and you have the appropriate immunizations – http://wwwnc.cdc.gov/travel/destinations/haiti.aspx At this time the immediate need is for medical and trauma personnel; while we wish we could use all of the support so generously offered, The United States Agency for International Development’s Office (IDC) of Foreign Disaster Assistance are asking that those volunteers without significant search & rescue or surgical or trauma training please wait – the city is finding it difficult to accommodate. Please still let us know of your interest, as help will be needed for weeks and months. · Donate medical supplies (CLICK HERE for current list). Send donations to One5 Foundation, 11221 Roe Ave, Leawood, KS 66211. The IDC has indicated that they are unable to accept small quantity donations so we will be acting as a consolidator. Thank you to the many people have stepped forward offering prayers, financial contributions, supplies or have volunteered. Your support is appreciated! ![]() A few nights ago we posted to Facebook that HUB'ees were starting to rally around getting help to Haitians. We want to alert you to One5 Foundation which is a member of the HUB community that is working with Spryte Loriano, HUB President and Chief Humanitarian Officer, and Marcia King, Global Marketplace Manager, to provide quick solutions through the HUB community. You may want to help - here are four ways to do so:
HUB Support Team HUB'ees to Help in Haiti - Press Release from One5.org! More than 2 million people have been affected by the earthquake in Haiti. Relief and government agencies are already on the ground and One5 Foundation's medical team is on their way to help. The team will not only provide medical assistance, but will let us know what is needed and how best One5 can help. We anticipate sending a couple of teams to Haiti within the next two weeks. We will rely on Brad Gautney, One5 Foundation's Medical Director, to tell us what kind of medical expertise is needed, as well as what supplies we will need to send. Currently, financial support and awareness is what is needed most. We want to thank all of you that have already made a financial contribution and/or offered to help here or in Haiti - we appreciate your support! Special thanks to Bobby McKenzie with Infinity Building Services who has offered to match the first $5000 that is given to the Foundation and an anonymous donor who is matching an additional $2500. You can double the impact of your gift if you donate now to help us respond to this disaster. You can also help us raise awareness and generate support by posting a link to us on your facebook page or blog or by tweeting about us.
